Steelers Announce College Commitments
The Pacific Steelers are proud to announce that five of its club team players have committed to NCAA hockey programs for the 2005-06 season.
Tara Khan has
committed to Plattsburgh University. A highly skilled finesse defenceman, Tara is expected to have an immediate impact on a Plattsburgh team that was the 4th best team in the Nation.
Joining Khan at
Plattsburgh, is Steelers goaltender Sandra Grant
Grant shared goaltending duties with Jenny Lura for the Steelers this past season, and backstopped the team to a semi-final appearance at the Brampton Canadettes tournament, and a quarter final appearance at the Connecticut Polar Bear Tournament. Grant is expected to battle for the starting goaltending position at Plattsburgh next season.
Carly Barker has committed to Hamilton College. A hard-nosed, physical forward, Barker is expected to step in and contribute immediately to the Hamilton team.
Pacific Steelers Defenceman Mariesa Mason, and Forward Merryl Edington-Hyrb are Ivy League Bound.
Mason has committed to Princeton University.
A tenacious 5’9” defenceman, Mason anchored the Steelers blue line this year, and was the Steelers team Captain. Mason has been with the Steelers program since the 2002 season, and will join a Princeton squad that was ranked in the NCAA top 10 for much of the year. Princeton was ranked the best college in the United States by US News.
Edington-Hyrb has committed to Brown University. A gritty 5’6’ forward, Edington-Hyrb played most of the year as a Defenceman, before being converted to a Forward.
With Mason and Edington-Hyrb joining the Ivy ranks, the Steelers will have players on the roster of all Ivy League hockey teams next season, with the exception of Cornell.
Other Steelers alumni on Ivy League rosters next season include: Jennifer Raimondi (Harvard), Jenna Spring (Yale), Christina Sharun (Yale), Danielle Grundy (Dartmouth)
In addition to these 5 players, several other players who have played for the Steelers in the past, have committed to various colleges. Alycia Matthews, who played for the Steelers at the 2002 NASH SuperSeries
tournament, and 2004 Esso Nationals, and Tia Hanson, who played for the Steelers in the 2001 NASH SuperSeries tournament have both committed to Wisconsin.
Whitney Sears, who played for the Steelers at the
2004 North American Hockey Academy Tournament, has committed to Bemidji.
